Northeast State Drought Response Coordination Meetings
Beginning in June 2020, Northeast DEWS region states held drought response coordination meetings. Current condition reports and forecasts from water utility managers, hydrologists, meteorologists, and agriculture and wildland fire experts were assessed to provide decision makers with evidence-based science to help mitigate impacts. For a significant number of counties in several New England states, the drought reached levels that resulted in emergency declarations and triggered federal support programs. Because of the number of states involved and the timing of their meetings, the Northeast DEWS team (which includes Northeast Region Climate Center staff) worked closely with several National Weather Service forecast offices to assemble and share state status reports.
